Plan your Visit to Treak Cliff Cavern

We are open daily and welcome visitors to enjoy our self-guided audio tour, with timed entry slots available for groups of up to 20 people.

Opening Times

  • Last cavern admission: 4:15 pm
  • We recommend arriving by 4:00 pm.
  • If you are joining the final tour of the day, we suggest arriving 15–30 minutes before your timed entry to allow time to browse our gift shop, museum, and visitor centre before your visit, as these facilities close when the final tour finishes.

Getting Here

Treak Cliff Cavern is located just a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Castleton, or approximately a 15-minute walk. We also offer free on-site parking for visitors.

Your Visit

The self-guided audio experience takes approximately 45 minutes, allowing you to explore the cavern at your own pace while learning about its fascinating history and geology.

Accessibility

As Treak Cliff Cavern is a natural cave, access can be challenging:

  • The cavern is not suitable for wheelchairs or prams.
  • There are 80 steps leading up to the cavern entrance from the visitor area.
  • Inside the cavern, there are 196 steps in total, with no individual flight exceeding 30 steps.
  • Some passages are low and a little narrow, with the lowest point measuring 4 ft 6 in (137 cm) in the entrance tunnel.

Audio Guide

To make the most of your visit, we recommend downloading the Treak Cliff Cavern Audio App before you arrive. Free Wi-Fi is available on site should you need to download it before entering the cavern. Simply search for “Treak Cliff Cavern” in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

The new Treak Cliff Cavern Interpretation Centre is part-funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development - to upgrade the visitor offer, by providing a heritage and interpretation centre. Project reference number: 101006.
